A much needed corrective to the shallow reporting of most of the British media. Starmer has notched up some significant acheivements. But the 'fiscal straightjacket' was too tight and between Starmer and Rachel Reeves, the pitch was less than perfect. And, yes, the point scoring journalism of the BBC and other media is tedious, but the communications skills of Number 10 have deteriorated since the days of Thatcher and Blair.

Yes but contingent on one thing we still don’t know. “ Rachel Reeves will have to find a way to loosen her self-imposed fiscal straitjacket.” So much of the government’s difficulty comes from this mistake last year. And we don’t know if she will remove it it Starmer will remove her.

Excellent and balanced account. Press hysteria is beyond eccentric. If a week is a long time in politics, then there is surely time in the next four years to adjust the tiller.
