Eons ago, Philip Stephens was briefly my boss at the Financial Times. He was good then and he is just as good today. The US – in which I lived with my American wife for just short of fifteen years – has disgraced itself, and that disgrace cannot be undone, it can only be remembered as a warning. My hope, and Philip's, is that Europe will now come together and join with Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and all other freedom-loving countries to create a new world order in which, over time, the US will have to earn its place.

For more from me, read Making Sense of the World From France on Substack. My next post will be tomorrow.

As you say Philip, hiding under the bed clothes with your fingers crossed and your head in a bucket of sand whilst gritting your teeth, which has been the European strategy for the last decade and particularly in the last three years is no longer an option. A silver lining to the dark cloud that is the current US administration. Thank you for the article.

The number of abstentions no doubt is partly related to the complicity of the UK and some other western nations in the horrendous death toll and destruction in Gaza.
