Well argued, neo Gaullism seems a bit of a stretch. What other motives? What about a poor feel? A corporatist does what he does?

Some Neo-Gaullism I think.....France, like Britain, has an exceptionalist streak!

Quite right. Macron is posturing as a neo-Gaullist but aspires to become a latter-day Neveille Chamberlain. The West has been slow in providing Ukraine with the necessary weaponry to defeat Russia's incremental advance in the Donbas and has not always provided the kinds of weapons necessary. Biden approves howitzers but only those that can reach 75 miles instead of 300, as Kiyv has requested, for fear of provoking Putin. Let the Ukranians pursue victory, which would mean for them pushing Russia back to the Feb 24 lines. Such "humiliation" for Putin might be enough to force regime change, which would make all the difference to a postwar settlement.

See John Sawer's Opinion essay in the FT 8 June 2022. I don't think I've been too harsh on Macron; his current posture has a history. Regards, A
