Good stuff, Philip. I have given up on the New European, of which I had some hopes, because of its relentless insistence that Britain should rejoin the EU as soon as possible, preferably tomorrow.

I should add that I am greatly looking forward to your book on the Irish Question.

Reform’s popularity is the log jam, untested and with no real policies they appeal to people even when they only offer vacuous sound bites…… but they are now not a protest vote and that’s the problem. Why would the EU want us back in the fold….. we need a generational change in politics towards a pro European majority even to be likely to manage a shift. We are adrift in our own deluded exceptionalism……

You are right of course..it would be a shared decision and we do need a decisive shift to a pro-European majority

Exactly what Lord Heseltine said when interviewed at the Cambridge literary festival by Steve Richards on his podcast.
